What is Spyware?

In the past few years many unscrupulous companies have begun to bundle programs that contain code which monitors your computer activity and sends it back to advertising agencies. This information is collected without your consent and can contain anything, including personal information mined from your computer. Spyware/adware/malware can also cause advertisements to pop-up on your system as well as significantly decreasing the performance and usability of your sytem.

Getting Rid of Spyware

If you have been using a computer connected to the internet for any significant length of time then odds are very high that spyware has snuck onto your system. To get rid of it you should download a program such as SpyBot or AdAware. You should also regularly run Windows Update or set it to automatically update itself. Many spyware programs install themselves through security holes in unpatched versions of Microsoft Windows!
